Historical Society

The Navajo County Historical Society is located at the northeast corner of East Arizona Street and Navajo Boulevard in the Historic Navajo County Courthouse. The courthouse also houses the Chamber of Commerce office and the Old West Museum.

Many notorious trials were held in the stately courtroom, but only one hanging took place in the courtyard. For seventy-eight years the courthouse was used to dispense justice to all of what is now known as Navajo County.

Visiting hours in the winter are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some variations of time during the summer months when Indian dances are performed nightly on the courthouse lawn.

In 1976, a new governmental center was established south of Holbrook, and all county offices were moved to that location. The old Navajo County Courthouse had been vacant for five years when the County Board of Supervisors asked the Navajo County Historical Society to open a museum in the building, which was accomplished. The Historical Society set out to obtain objects for display and soon local residents began to donate their furniture, keepsakes, and family history to make the Historical Society Museum what it is today.

Help us...Capture the past!
The Navajo County Historical Society is working hard to preserve Holbrook's past. Holbrook has a rich history, but much of it has faded away. Thankfully, many of Holbrook's longtime residents still have historic artifacts in their possession. The Navajo County Historical Society, Holbrook Main Street, the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, the City of Holbrook and the Petrified Forest Museum Association want to capture the past before it's gone forever. For more information, or to donate a piece of Holbrook's history or funds for their collection and preservation, call the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 928-524-6558.
